NIST Publishes Smart Grid Cybersecurity Guidelines

The National Institute of Standards and Technology this week issued its first set of cybersecurity guidelines for electric utility smart grids, including recommendations on high-level security requirements, risk assessment, and evaluation of customer privacy issues.

The NIST guidelines, which are the product of 17 months of work by the agency and a working group including more than 450 people from government and the private sector, are not binding on the private sector. They follow up on a January NIST document on smart grid interoperability standards, which included a cybersecurity review.
